Is Your Store Too Slow? How Page Speed Quietly Cuts Your Sales

Most store owners check their store on fast home Wi-Fi, on a phone that has visited the site a hundred times. It loads instantly, so they assume speed is fine.
Your customers aren't seeing that version. They're arriving for the first time, often on mobile data, sometimes on an older phone. For them, a heavy store can take long enough to load that they give up and go back to the search results or the social feed they came from.
Speed problems are sneaky because they don't show up as an error. They just quietly lower your sales and make your ads more expensive. Here's how to check your store properly and what to fix first.
Quick answer: does page speed affect sales?
Yes. A slow store loses shoppers before they see your products, makes browsing frustrating, and can hold back your Google rankings. The usual causes on Shopify are large images, too many apps and scripts, heavy themes and video, and leftover code from apps you've uninstalled. Fixing images and removing unused apps are usually the quickest wins.
How to test your store's speed properly
- Use Google's PageSpeed Insights. It's free. Paste in your homepage, then a product page and a collection page, since each one loads differently. Focus on the mobile results.
- Look at the real-user data if it's there. At the top, PageSpeed Insights may show how your store performs for real visitors over the past few weeks. That matters more than the single score.
- Check Shopify's own report. Your Shopify admin has a web performance report in Analytics that shows how fast your store is for real visitors.
- Test it like a customer. Open your store in a private window on your phone, on mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, and see how long it takes before you can actually see and tap the product.
The three numbers that matter
Google measures real-world speed with three "Core Web Vitals". You don't need to be technical to understand them:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how long until the main content, usually your hero image or product photo, appears. Google considers 2.5 seconds or less good.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks. Google considers 200 milliseconds or less good.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the page jumps around while it loads, like a button moving just as you try to tap it. Google considers 0.1 or less good.
Don't chase a perfect score of 100. A store full of real product photos rarely gets there, and that's fine. What matters is that the page feels quick and stable for shoppers.
What usually slows a Shopify store down
1. Huge images
Product photos straight from a camera or designer can be several megabytes each. Shopify resizes images for different screens, but very large files, oversized hero banners and big GIFs still slow the first view down.
Fix: Resize images before uploading (around 2000px wide is plenty for most product photos), compress them, and avoid autoplaying GIFs. Replace a heavy image slideshow on your homepage with one strong hero image.
2. Too many apps
Every app that adds something to your storefront, like popups, chat widgets, reviews, upsells or trackers, can add its own scripts. One or two are fine. Ten or more often add up to a slow store.
Fix: List every app and ask, "Does this make me money or save me real time?" Remove the ones that don't. Look for apps that do several jobs at once instead of one each.
3. Leftover code from old apps
Some apps leave code in your theme even after you uninstall them. Your store keeps loading scripts for tools you don't use anymore.
Fix: After uninstalling an app, check its help page for removal steps, or have a developer look through your theme for leftover snippets. Always work on a copy of your theme so you can undo anything.
4. Heavy themes, video and fonts
Background videos, animations, several custom fonts and large page sections all add weight. They can look impressive on a desktop and feel sluggish on a phone.
Fix: Use one or two fonts, keep autoplay video off your mobile homepage, and remove sections that don't help people shop. If your theme is old and heavily customised, a modern, well-built theme can be faster than any number of tweaks.
5. Too many tracking scripts
Marketing pixels and analytics tags are useful, but duplicates are common, for example the same pixel installed by an app and in the theme code.
Fix: Use Shopify's built-in customer events or official sales channel apps for your pixels, and remove duplicate tags.
What to fix first
- Compress and resize your biggest images, starting with the homepage hero and best-selling products.
- Remove apps you don't need, then check for leftover code.
- Simplify the mobile homepage: one hero, clear sections, no autoplay video.
- Retest the same pages with PageSpeed Insights, so you can see what changed.
Make one change at a time and retest, so you know what made the difference. And always make theme changes on a duplicate theme first, then publish it once you've checked it.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good PageSpeed score for a Shopify store?
There isn't one magic number. Many successful stores score in the middle range on mobile because product photos and apps add weight. Focus on the real-user Core Web Vitals passing and on how fast the store feels on a phone, rather than chasing 100.
Does page speed affect Google rankings?
Google uses page experience signals, including Core Web Vitals, as part of how it ranks pages. Speed alone won't push a weak page to the top, but a slow store can lose out when competitors are otherwise similar.
Will removing apps break my store?
It can if an app controls something visible, like reviews or a size chart, so check what each app does before removing it. Test on a duplicate theme, and keep a list of what you removed in case you need to reinstall something.
Is a speed optimization app worth it?
Some can help with things like image compression, but adding another app to fix speed can backfire. Start with the free fixes above, like smaller images and fewer apps, before paying for anything.
