Why Shoppers Abandon Their Cart on Shopify (and How to Win Them Back)

Someone found your store, liked a product enough to add it to their cart, and then left. That's the most painful kind of lost sale, because the shopper was so close.
It happens on every store. Research from the Baymard Institute has put the average online cart abandonment rate at around 70% for years. Some of that is people just browsing. But a big share leave because of things you can fix, and the rest can often be won back.
Here are the 7 reasons I see most often on Shopify stores, what to do about each one, and how to recover the shoppers who still leave.

Quick answer: why do shoppers abandon their carts?
Most shoppers abandon their cart because of unexpected costs, a checkout that feels slow or complicated, or a lack of trust at the moment they're asked to pay. Showing total costs early, simplifying checkout, adding express payment options and reassurance, then sending well-timed recovery emails is the most reliable way to turn more carts into orders.
1. Surprise costs at checkout
Shipping, taxes or fees that only appear at the last step are the classic reason people leave. The product suddenly costs more than they expected, and the trust is gone.
Fix: Show shipping costs, or your free shipping threshold, on the product page and in the cart. If you can, build some of the shipping cost into your prices and offer free shipping above a sensible order value.
2. Being forced to create an account
A first-time buyer doesn't want another password. If your checkout requires an account, some of them will close the tab.
Fix: In your Shopify checkout settings, make customer accounts optional. You can invite buyers to create an account after they've ordered.
3. Missing payment options
If a shopper's preferred way to pay isn't there, or they have to type every card number on a phone, many won't bother.
Fix: Turn on express checkout options like Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal, and show their buttons in the cart, not only on the final step. Show the payment logos you accept on product pages too.
4. Delivery that's too slow or unclear
"When will it arrive?" is a question every buyer has. If the answer is vague or too far away, people go back to a store they already know.
Fix: Show an estimated delivery time on the product page and in the cart, and be honest about it. A clear "Arrives in 3–5 business days" beats a hidden shipping policy.
5. Not enough trust at the last step
Paying is where doubts peak. Is this store real? Can I return it? Who do I contact if something goes wrong?
Fix: Add a short reassurance line near the checkout button: secure payment, your returns promise and a way to contact you. Make sure your refund and shipping policies are easy to find and written in plain language.
6. A clumsy cart on mobile
Tiny buttons, popups covering the screen, discount code boxes that send people off to search for codes, and slow-loading carts all add friction on a phone, which is where most shoppers are.
Fix: Test your cart and checkout on your own phone. Remove popups from the cart, make the checkout button big and obvious, and keep the discount field small so it doesn't send people hunting for codes.
7. They weren't ready to buy yet
Some shoppers use the cart as a wishlist. They're comparing, waiting for payday or showing someone else. That's normal, and it's why recovery matters.
Fix: Make it easy to come back: keep the cart saved, and follow up with a reminder at the right time.
How to win back shoppers who still leave
Shopify can send an automatic abandoned checkout email to shoppers who entered their email but didn't finish paying. Turn it on in your marketing automations, then make it better:
- Send a short series, not one email. A reminder within a few hours, a second one the next day, and a final one a couple of days later.
- Show the product. Include the product image, name and price, with one clear button back to the cart.
- Answer the doubt. Use the second email to cover shipping, returns or reviews, the things that usually stop people.
- Use discounts carefully. If every abandoned cart gets a discount, shoppers learn to wait for one. Save it for the last email, if you use one at all.
- Add SMS if shoppers have opted in. A short text can work well, but only send it to people who have given you permission.

What should you fix first?
- Show costs and delivery times early (points 1 and 4).
- Turn on express checkout and guest checkout (points 2 and 3).
- Set up your abandoned checkout emails, so you start recovering sales right away.
- Improve trust and the mobile cart (points 5 and 6).

Frequently asked questions
What is a normal cart abandonment rate?
Industry studies, like those from the Baymard Institute, put the average at around 70%. Your own rate depends on your products, prices and traffic. What matters most is whether it's improving after you make changes.
Where do I see abandoned checkouts in Shopify?
In your Shopify admin, open Orders and then Abandoned checkouts. You'll see who left, what they had in their cart and whether a recovery email was sent.
Should I offer a discount in abandoned cart emails?
Not in the first one. Start with a simple reminder and an answer to common doubts. If you do offer a discount, keep it for the final email so you don't train customers to abandon on purpose.
Does free shipping really reduce abandonment?
It often helps, because shipping costs are one of the most common reasons people leave. If free shipping isn't possible on every order, a clear threshold like "Free shipping over $50" can lift order values at the same time.
